Retired Navy LCDR Roy Boehm, who fought three wars, and started the Navy’s first SEAL team, has died at age 84.  Boehm became a legend nationally for the historic role he played in pioneering unconventional warfare tactics.

Around New England with the First District

The First District ended the year with a meeting held at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. After our Tirante Tavern lunch and an update on NRA activities, CDR David Kelly, the PNS Deputy Commander, presented an informative update on shipyard operations. PNS is the Navy’s lead yard supporting Los Angeles and Virginia class submarines. We closed with a base tour highlighting the shipyard’s rich history, capabilities, and state-of-the-art housing facility for our Sailors. The First District is working on additional events this year.

Arkansas Nurse Serves on USNS Mercy Humanitarian Mission to Western Pacific

On 24 July 2008, LCDR Rosa Abbott, a Reservist from the Navy Operational Support Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, boarded a plane headed for Australia to meet up with the USNS Mercy hospital ship, travel to places many folks have never heard of, and help provide medical care to those who might otherwise go without. The USNS Mercy hospital ship serves as a platform to bring medical, engineering, veterinary, and other humanitarian assistance programs, both ashore and afloat, with the aim of strengthening relations among the U.S. and Western Pacific partner nations.
