The Naval Historical Foundation (NHF) has been in the business of preserving naval history since 1926, perhaps the only Navy-oriented institution dedicated solely to that effort. Many others are also vitally interested in naval history, but only the NHF does that and nothing else.

Military and government travelers will have more money for hotel bookings in many cities, under per diem rates set for fiscal 2012. Chicago will see one of the biggest increases.

The Defense Accounting and Finance Service (DFAS) announced that pay days for military retirees will be changing to the first day of the month versus the first "business day." The change will affect the October 2011 and January 2012 payments which will now be on September 30 and December 30 respectively.

A new plan to overhaul the military retirement system would radically reshape military retirement –– scrapping the 20-year retirement model in favor of a civilian-like system that would pay much less to those who make the military a career, while providing monetary retirement to everyone, no matter how little time they spend in uniform.

In 1983, I promised my wife I would bring her back home after 20 years of service to our Nation. But, 20 years came and went nine years ago. This was not a bad thing. Goals can change and we adjust to reach them.

We've been in business 236 years. Our business model is fairly consistent and matches our current branding: A global force for good. Some of the same reasons for having a Navy more than 200 years ago are the same today, such as protecting merchant vessels against piracy.
