On 8 March 2013, I will wrap up my service to our great nation and Navy. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve for 30 years as we have tackled many challenges while always achieving success for our nation. Over the last 15 years of my career, I have served as a Command Master Chief.

“Stand Navy out to sea” the famous line from “Anchors Away,” always reminds me of my time at sea when I was attached as ship’s company to the USS Midway. I can still remember the first time we went underway, wondering what it was going to be like in the open water and if I was going to like or regret my decision to join a service whose primary mission is to be away from land.

I heard someone say that most people won’t be saved by first responders––policemen and firemen; most people will be saved by their neighbors and their families. I believe that applies during more than just times of crisis. Our families, specifically our military families, are our saviors on a daily basis.

Throughout my career, I have learned that in order to be a good leader, reading is a fundamental task that must be incorporated into my daily routine. Information obtained through reading loads the leader with the power to support those we lead.

I reenlisted for the first time in 1986 and the only thing I was worried about was how much Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB) I would receive. I decided to take a chance and reenlist for only four years, vice six, so I could get another SRB at a higher pay grade and for more months on my next reenlistment. It didn’t work, but that is not my message.

There is no question that the United States Navy Submarine Force is the best in the world in its ability to hide and seek. They have perfected this ability through experience, training, technology and leadership. They are key in making our Navy true to our CNO’s tenets of “Warfighting First, Operate Forward and Be Ready.”

Every November, our nation observes Military Family Month to pay tribute to their lasting contributions and the sacrifice they’ve made in the name of their service member and our military. Now that November is quickly becoming a distant memory, what does that mean for our military family?

On September 16 our Navy’s newest Chief Petty Officers were frocked and now wear the anchors that identify them as technical experts within their trade and leaders throughout our Navy. This year, MCPON West introduced CPO 365 which shifts focus from a six-week process of training our CPO Selectees to a year-round approach in training our First Class Petty Officers. This process emphasizes the importance we place on leadership development throughout a Sailor’s career.

In 1983, I promised my wife I would bring her back home after 20 years of service to our Nation. But, 20 years came and went nine years ago. This was not a bad thing. Goals can change and we adjust to reach them.

Ben Franklin once said, “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.” How right he was. For those of you who just “changed” from being a first class petty officer to that of a chief petty officer, you may have thought your time of transformation was complete on the 16th of September; but I say your time of transformation is just beginning!
