Scholarship Recepients

The Association of the United States Navy’s (AUSN) Scholarship Program awards scholarships to undergraduate students who are members, children and grandchildren of AUSN members and surviving spouses of deceased members. After much deliberation, AUSN’s Scholarship Committee, chaired by LCDR Gail W. Holzworth, NC, USNR (Ret.), selected 23 individuals to receive scholarships that ranged from $1,000 to $1,500 for the 2016-2017 school year. A total of $27,000 in scholarships was awarded this year. Recipients were selected based on their area of study, extracurricular activities, leadership, GPA and volunteer activities.

AUSN Salutes Scholarship Program Founders

CAPT Lucille Weeks Mellish, NC, USN (ret.) and her late husband, CDR William J. Mellish, CEC, USNR (ret.) established the AUSN Scholarship Program in 1985 and have been major contributors for more than 30 years. Their generosity has helped over 400 Sailors and/or their family members attend college.

In addition to serving their country for over 50 years – CAPT Mellish as part of the nurse corps and CDR Mellish as part of the civil engineering corps – the Mellish’s were involved with a number of organizations and gave generously of their time to each and every one. At AUSN CAPT Mellish served on the Budget and Finance Committee and CDR Mellish served on a number of different committees.

Navy Magazine had a chance to talk with CAPT Mellish recently and asked her what drove her and her late husband to start AUSN’s Scholarship Program. CAPT Mellish talked about the importance of education to both of them. She said, “we wanted to help Sailors and their families earn an education by helping them go to college, especially those individuals who were not able to afford it or just needed a little bit of extra financial support.”

AUSN is grateful to the Mellish’s for all of the support they have given Sailors and their families over the years. Their act of kindness will impact generations to come.
