AUSN Celebrates the United States Navy’s 249th Birthday

Updated: Oct 17

In 1972, the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, designated October 13 as the official U.S. Navy Birthday “to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the Naval Service.”

Forged By the Sea in 2024

Paying tribute to how the United States Navy has grown, developed and innovated throughout its 249 years of maritime operations, the Navy’s birthday theme for 2024 is “Forged by the Sea.”  This attribution further underscores the unique and important relationship that the Navy and its Sailors embrace in their commitment to the security of our country, their dedication to service and their bond with the sea.

Whether you serve or served on land, air or sea, AUSN applauds your courage, dedication and sense of adventure that continues to fuel our Navy’s innovation, growth and development. Thank you for your service to our nation.

Why October 13

Shortly after the start of the American Revolution, the Continental Congress moved to purchase two armed vessels to stop ships from bringing supplies to British soldiers. On that same day, October 13, 1775, the delegates voted to form a naval committee to oversee that undertaking and establish the regulations for management. Thus, the Continental Navy was formed.

Less than 18 months later, Commodore Esek Hopkins boldly expanded the Navy’s role. With a squadron of eight vessels and 300 Sailors and Marines, Hopkins set course for the Bahamas. On March 3, 1777, this first overseas expeditionary force of the Continental Navy stormed Forts Nassau and Montagu on New Providence Island and brought back to the Continental Army some 73 cannons, mortars and munitions.

The United States Navy was formalized in the spring of 1794 when Congress authorized the purchase of six frigates to protect American shipping from Algerian corsairs. Despite the conflict ending in 1795, three frigates, the Constitution, United States and Constellation, were completed. The USS Constitution remains a commissioned warship today.
